History: The New Britain Rock Cats took a somewhat winding, beginning as Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox. That winding road included a stretch in nearby Bristol, Connecticut where they played as the Bristol Red Sox from 1973 to’82, a stint as the New Britain Red Sox from ’83 to ’94, and a season as the Hardware City Rock Cats in 1995 before becoming the New Britain Rock Cats the following year. They spent over 20 years as an affiliate team for the Red Sox, then started an affiliate agreement with the Minnesota Twins in the same year they first took the Rock Cats nickname. Their affiliation with the Twins lasted from 1995 to 2014, at which point the Twins severed their relationship and the Rock Cats signed on with the Colorado Rockies. Many future Major Leaguers made stops with the Rock Cats, including future World Series winners David “Big Papi” Ortiz and A.J. Pierzynski.
